CTA Agrees with University on Bus Routes

Thursday, May 16, 2013

The CTA board is poised to approve an agreement today with the University of Chicago that would allow the CTA to continue to operate four campus bus routes for five years, through Aug. 31, 2018.

Discussions between the CTA and the University of Chicago began last fall. The buses that would continue to run are the Nos. 170-U. of Chicago/Midway, 171 U. of Chicago/Hyde Park, 172 U. of Chicago/Kenwood, and 192 U. of Chicago Hospitals Express. The buses are primarily used by University of Chicago students, but not exclusively.

There will be no changes to the routes. "We're very encouraged by the agreement with CTA," University of Chicago spokesman Steve Kloehn said.

The agency reached agreements with other groups for seven routes, including UPS, but couldn't reach an agreement with Metra, and the No. 33-Mag Mile Express was cut in March. The CTA may be negotiating with the Museum of Science and Industry for the No. 10-Museum of Science and Industry route.

The four University of Chicago routes saw a combined 1.2 million rides in 2012.
