53rd Street Hyde Park Traffic Study

The South East Chicago Commission has begun a study to determine what the developments along 53rd Street and in the neighborhood overall will do to the traffic in Hyde Park. SECC executive director Wendy Walker Williams said the study came as a result of the 53rd Street Visioning Workshops. Traffic, parking and congestion are a major concern for many Hyde Parkers and often cited as reasons against plans for new businesses, construction or economic development.

Free Parking on Sunday Questioned

The new agreement with Chicago Parking Meters, LLC allows for free parking for much of the city on Sundays, but it expands the hours for parking meters in the Central Business District. Alderman Will Burns poses question on Twitter, "City estimates that CPM will not generate significantly more revenue from extended parking hours less free Sunday parking. Your thoughts?"

New SSA Tax Participation by PIN

The South East Chicago Commission released a database of properties that will participate in the proposed SSA tax contributions. Tax payments are outlined by property PIN# and the proposals are available for download now. The goal of a Special Service Area designation in Hyde Park is to create and maintain a vibrant, pedestrian friendly business district that reflects the culture and history of Hyde Park, serving local residents, stakeholders and visitors.

CTA Red Line Closure - Reconstruction Begins

Starting Sunday, May 19, the CTA Red Line (Dan Ryan portion) will be closed for five months, for reconstruction. During construction, Red Line trains will continue to serve the South Side, via the Green Line. Red Line trains will share track and stations with Green Line trains between 35th-Bronzeville-IIT and Ashland/63rd.

CTA Agrees with University on Bus Routes

The CTA board is poised to approve an agreement today with the University of Chicago that would allow the CTA to continue to operate four campus bus routes for five years, through Aug. 31, 2018.

Construction crews started work on a new CDOT Street Improvement Project on Harper Avenue, from 52nd Street to 53rd Street. Harper Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic for a period of approximately 45 calendar days.
