UChicago Police Presence on 53rd Street

Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Early last month a building permit was issued for a $210,000 renovation project at 1411 E. 53rd St that would bring the University of Chicago Police Department to the former Dunkin’ Donuts location on 53rd. Renovations will include alterations to the first for to provide office space for UCPD.

The space will be divided into office and meeting spaces. The UCPD office will support patrol officers in the neighborhood and host community policing meetings in the space.

This office will not act as a police station.

UCPD jurisdiction extends 37th Street south to 64th Street, which makes the new 53rd Street fairly central.

Marlon Lynch, associate vice president for safety and security and UChicago’s chief of police, said in a press release that the department will evaluate the office use and benefits to determine the most appropriate long-term presence in the neighborhood.

The office is scheduled to open in March 2014.
