DuSomething Green for Arts and Crafts Festival 2013

Wednesday, June 05, 2013

DuSomething Green! is theme for the DuSable Museum's
39TH ANNUAL ARTS & CRAFT FESTIVAL

Saturday and Sunday, July 13 & 14, 2013

On August 6, 1974, the DuSable Museum held its first Art Festival just one year after the museum moved to its present location in Washington Park. Eight artists participated that year!
Key amongst them were Margaret Burroughs and Sophie Wessel, who came up with the idea to organize this event.  Now the event hosts nearly 200 artists annually.

Today, the festival is known as the DuSable Museum’s Arts and Crafts Festival and is in its 39th year. The Festival is a showcase for local artists, an exhibition of fine art and unique and hand-crafted work which features artists working in traditional, ethnic and experimental fine arts and crafts that relate to African-American themes, identity, history and culture.  The Festival underscores the DuSable mission of preserving the history and culture of the African-American experience.

This year DuSable also celebrates Dr. Margaret Burroughs (1915-2010), Founder of the DuSable Museum of African American History.
