Congressman Rush Sheds Light on Affordable Care Act

Tuesday, October 01, 2013

Letter from Congressman Bobby L. Rush, 1st District Illinois:

The time is here! Key provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) were initiated, October 1, 2013. This is of particular importance to business owners because as you know, under the Affordable Care Act, all employers must provide notification to their employees about the new Health Insurance Marketplace by October 1st and to each new employee at the time of hire beginning October I , 2013, regardless of part-time or full-time status. (There is no fine or penalty under the law for failing to provide the notice).

To assist employers with their compliance of this rule, The U.S. Department of Labor has provided employers with two sample notices they may use. One is for employers who do not offer a health plan and the other is for employers who offer a health plan for some or all employees. Please use the links below to access and share the appropriate notification with your staff. Each l ink will provide you with general information and a form to be used if your employee decides to apply for coverage in the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace.

Another important ACA provision that begins October 1st for small businesses (50 or fewer full-time employees) is the opening of the Small Business Health Options Program or SHOP. This new program simplifies the process of buying health insurance for your small business. With one application, on your own or with the help of a licensed agent or broker, you can compare the price, coverage, and quality of plans in an online marketplace.
