Special Service Areas, known as Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in other cities, are local tax districts that fund expanded services and programs through a localized property tax levy within contiguous areas. The enhanced services and programs are in addition to those currently provided through the City.

The South East Chicago Commission made application to establish an SSA to bring needed attention to the business districts and commercial corridor including 53rd Street in Hyde Park.

We need community feedback and ask you to complete this short survey about the retail and commercial offerings in the area.

Important areas of concern include:

  • Attracting new desired businesses and providing more/better services for existing businesses.
  • Developing a plan for economic development or neighborhood improvement overall.
  • Improving/adding parking and parking management.
  • Implementing programs to improve safety through lighting, security cameras or hiring off-duty police officers.
  • Creating a unique sense of place through branding initiatives and/or special events.
  • Developing a customer loyalty program.
  • Beautifying the commercial areas through landscaping and planters.
  • Keeping the sidewalks clean of litter and snow.
