Business Education Workshops for February

BACP offers free Business Education Workshops every Wednesday and Friday. Workshops vary each month and are conducted by City Officials, experts and partner business organizations. All workshops are free, open to the public and held at City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, in Room 805.

2/19 What You Need To Know About Business Insurance
3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
Presented by Sandra Cavoto, Farmers Insurance

Starting a new business can be difficult, and being covered by insurance when the unexpected happens is essential to being successful. There is enough to worry about with the business, and it is the insurance company's responsibility to worry about your liability, losses, worker's compensation, and more. This workshop is designed to show you the ins and outs of commercial insurance, and everything that is included to help you understand what you need for your specific business.

2/21 How to Obtain a Sidewalk Cafe Permit
9:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Presented by BACP Public Way Use Unit

Take the mystery out of the Sidewalk Cafe Permit Application process by attending this informative workshop. We will explain the application process, inform you of all the requirements, and help you get prepared to submit an application. The entire application process may take 30 - 45 days, and the 2014 Sidewalk Cafe Season begins on March 1, so make sure to reserve your seat now.

2/26 How to Become Certified
2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Presented by the City of Chicago Department of Procurement Services (DPS)

This workshop will provide an overview of the five certification programs currently offered by the City of Chicago: Minority Owned Business Enterprise (MBE), Women Owned Business Enterprise (WBE),Business Enterprises Owned and/or Operated by Persons with Disabilities (BEPD), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE). Receive information regarding the application process and how to avoid the most common mistakes applicants encounter when submitting their applications.

This information is designed to outline the role and responsibility of the Department of Procurement Services, and how the City's purchasing process works. This workshop is ideal for companies looking to do business with the City of Chicago.

2/28 Twitter for the Technology Challenged
9:30 to 11:00 a.m.
Presented by Brandon Lewin, Cardinal Path

"What is Twitter? How do I use it for my business? What is a hashtag? I am so confused!" These are questions and a statement that is probably swirling around in your head. It is OK. You are not alone. Twitter is confusing for even some of the technology advanced. It is more about a mentality, than it is about being technology savvy. Anyone can do it. You just have to understand how it works. In this workshop, you will learn the basics of Twitter, how to use it effectively for your business, and how to get in the press by using it.
