Flying Squirrel Playlot Will Receive New Playground

Saturday, June 01, 2013

Flying Squirrel Playlot Park, 6600 S. Woodlawn Ave, is ready for new improvements and upgrades! The park has been approved for new playground equipment. The goal is to bring the best possible playground experience to the children.  Additional improvements to address seating and fencing are still being discussed.

The approval is the result of overwhelming support from community members and leaders who signed the petition, wrote letters of support, and championed this endeavor. Gabriel Piemonte, Friends of Woodlawn Parks, expressed sincere appreciation for everyone’s commitment.

After the park receives its new makeover, friends, families, and supporters will be invited to a special celebration to signify the re-opening of the new Flying Squirrel Playlot Park.

History

The Chicago Park District acquired this once-vacant lot for recreational use in 1969, and officially named it Flying Squirrel in 1998. Flying squirrels were among the many animals that inhabited Cook County when European settlers arrived in the early 19th century. They still can be seen here occasionally today. Flying Squirrel Park is an idyllic location for families to spend a portion of their day relaxing and enjoying the outdoors and nature.
