South Side in Focus Photography

Friday, March 14, 2014

We would like to invite you to a photography installation and event that takes place this Friday, March 14th from 5:30p-7:30p: South Side in Focus. This installation is a display of photographs at the Experimental Station (6100 S Blackstone Ave, Chicago, IL 60637) that attempts to depict a more personal narrative of life in South Side communities.

South Side in Focus originated from an interest in broadening our understanding of the community we live in. We are a group of undergraduate students at the University of Chicago who recognize that the narrative of the South Side that is most often portrayed by the media is one that emphasizes violence and poverty. However, these narratives do not show the vibrant histories or complexity of experiences within these communities.

We would love for you to join us this Friday at our reception for both participants of this endeavor and for all Chicago community members. We hope this event provides a space for you to explore, discuss, and appreciate these narratives with community members from all neighborhoods of Chicago. If you cannot make it to our event, please feel free to stop by during our open gallery hours from 10am to 6pm, March 13th through March 15th. If you would like more information, please contact us at or visit our facebook event page.
