The community visioning efforts that include major developments for the Harper Court site, "McMobil" redevelopment, and the City Hyde Park development can be traced back to the creation of the 53rd Street TIF District in 2001. More recently the vision has been shared and crafted by the 53rd Street Vision Workshops that began in 2007 and continue currently. These workshops were sponsored by former 4th Ward Alderman Toni Preckwinkle and are now sponsored by current 4th Ward Alderman William Burns. Additionally the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development (now Department of Housing and Economic Development, or DHED), the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) and a coalition of local institutional and community organizations including the 53rd Street TIF Advisory Council, the University of Chicago, the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce, Hyde Park, Kenwood Community Conference, Interfaith Open Communities and the South East Chicago Commission (SECC) have all been integral in the development of the 53rd Street Vision.
