Chancellor Robert J. Zimmer, who served as the University’s 13th president from 2006 to 2021, will be remembered as one of the most impactful leaders in the University’s distinguished history.

Statement on the Passing of University of Chicago President Robert J. Zimmer
Chicago, IL – The South East Chicago Commission (SECC) extends our heartfelt condolences to the family and University of Chicago community in the loss of former President Robert J. Zimmer. President Zimmer was a steadfast champion of Chicago’s South Side. During his tenure, President Zimmer partnered with the SECC and other local nonprofits to enhance the quality of life for residents through investments in community and economic development initiatives. We are grateful for his leadership at the University of Chicago. As a long-time partner, the SECC has provided micro-grants to beautify communities and provide technical support to small businesses to convene stakeholders for the economic vitality of our region. Our impact is not possible without people like President Zimmer and others who possess the shared goal of building a healthy and vibrant South Side that benefits everyone. President Zimmer leaves a remarkable career and legacy in academia, community, and civic service. The SECC is grateful for his life and all he brought to our area and region.
